LEXINGTON, Ky. – Sarah Harris became the first University of Kentucky women’s golfer to be selected to the Southeastern Conference All-Freshman Team when the league office announced its selections on Monday.
Harris’ selection marked the eighth time a Kentucky player has been recognized on an All-SEC team.
Eight freshmen were named to the conference’s all-freshman team.
“I’m really honored to have been selected to the team and to be the first UK player makes it even more special,” Harris said. “It’s really exciting to see hard work pay off. My freshman year has been challenging but fun and I can’t wait for the future of Kentucky women’s golf.”
Harris has competed in eight of the Wildcats’ nine tournaments this season, finishing second on the team in stroke average at 75.79. She placed inside the top-20 twice this year, including a tied for 16th place finish at the Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational and a career-best second place finish at the 2013 SEC Championships. Her second place finish was the highest this season for Kentucky and helped lead the Cats to their best finish at the league championships in 20 years, tying for fifth.
“We are so excited that Sarah has been named to the SEC All-Freshman Team,” head coach Golda Johansson Borst said. “It’s a great honor and I could not be more proud of her. She has worked very hard on her game and it’s been great to see how much she has grown from her first day on campus until now. Sarah has a great career ahead of her and I can’t wait to see what the next three years will bring.”
The Hermitage, Tenn., native helped guide the Wildcats this season to their third straight NCAA postseason appearance as UK will travel to Auburn, Ala., to compete in the East Regional May 9-11 at the Auburn University Club. Kentucky will aim to make their sixth NCAA Championship in program history, beginning on Thursday as the Cats must finish in the top-8 of the 24-team regional field to advance.
