UK Track & Field To Host Inaugural Outdoor Meet

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky track and field program has reached new heights under first-year head coach Edrick Floreal, and UK will make another important step on Saturday. Kentucky will officially break in its state of the art outdoor facility when UK hosts the inaugural Heart of the Bluegrass Classic.
The Wildcats will be welcoming visitors to an outdoor track and field meet on the Kentucky campus for the first time since the 1996 SEC Championships.
The meet will include high school, collegiate and open events. The first collegiate event – the women’s 4×100-meter relay – will get under way at 10:30 a.m. Multiple high school field events are slated to begin at 9 a.m. ET.
Fans can purchase tickets at the Cliff Hagan Baseball Stadium Ticket Window. Admission for adults is $5. Spectators aged 6-18 and those more than 65-years old gain admittance for $2. Children aged 2-5 get in free.
The ticket window will open at 8 a.m. ET on Saturday. Only cash will be accepted.
Public parking will be available in Parking Structure No. 7 at the corner of Complex & Sports Center Drive.
Fans in attendance can also participate in the UK track and field shoe drive this weekend. Spectators have the option to donate any type of shoes in any condition into collection bins, which will be located at the front entrance to the track and field complex.
The Kentucky Track and Field team is running the shoe drive benefitting those less fortunate around the world for the third consecutive year.
The Wildcats will also celebrate Senior Day during the meet. Katy Achtien, Kevin Bonfield, Keith Hayes, Shelby Kennard, Ben Mason, Shiara Robinson, Danielle Sampley, Luis Orta and Megan Wright’s UK careers will all be recognized at approximately 5:20 p.m. following the men’s 5,000 meters and before the 4×400-meter relays.
The Wildcats are coming off perhaps their best all-around meet of the season as both the men’s and women’s teams won the “Kentuckiana” Border Battle last weekend in Louisville, Ky.
Saturday’s meet will feature multiple Wildcats who are national leaders in their respective events’ rankings.
Rebecca Famurewa bettered her UK freshman-record discus record to 57.09 meters / 187’04” last weekend, a mark which ranks third nationally.
Andrew Evans owns the nation’s No. 5 discus mark.
The Wildcats also boast a pair of national top-10 hurdlers as Keith Hayes ranks No. 8 in the 110-meter hurdles and Kayla Parker owns the No. 10 100-meter hurdles time.
Chelsea Oswald, who is scheduled to race in the mile, posted the fifth-fastest 5,000 meters time in the country earlier this season.
Ten universities, including Kentucky, have entered competitors into Saturday’s meet.
The UK shoe drive runs until May 10. Other shoe drive drop off locations include the Johnson Recreation Center, Shively Sports Center (adjacent to Cliff Hagan Stadium) and CATS (attached to Memorial Coliseum).
