LEXINGTON, Ky. – Fresh off its second-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament’s round of 16, the Kentucky volleyball team is set to hit the hardwood for the 2013 spring schedule beginning on March 30. In addition to announcing the spring schedule, UK head coach Craig Skinner has added transfer setter Alyssa Gergins to the squad.

During the 2013 spring slate, UK will compete over the course of four weekends beginning with a home date against Illinois in Memorial Coliseum. The match is set for March 30 at 4 p.m. ET and fans are welcome to cheer on the Cats, free of charge.

“The spring sets up well for us in terms of great competition and team growth,” Skinner said. “We are going to play several very good teams, and have a chance to really implement a team system to prepare us for the fall. All of our players will get good match experience and have the chance to really develop their individual games.”

Following a matchup with the Illini, UK will return to the KIVA Collegiate Tournament in Louisville on April 6. Senior Desirre Wilkerson, junior Jackie Napper and former two-time All-America selection Stephanie Klefot suited up for Team KIVA as club players out of Louisville. A bevy of quality competition will travel to the Derby City including Cincinnati, Indiana, Ole Miss, Louisville and Western Kentucky for the day’s competition.

April 13 will see the Wildcats travel to the Circle City VBC Collegiate Tournament in Indianapolis.

UK will conclude spring action in West Lafayette, Ind., on the campus of Purdue to play both the host Boilermakers and Ball State on Saturday, April 20.

Gergins Joins Wildcats for 2013

Alyssa Gergins has joined the Wildcats in 2013. A setter from Murrieta, Calif., Gergins suited up for two seasons at The Master’s College in Santa Clara, Calif. Gergins helped lead the Mustangs to a 27-8 overall record in her sophomore season where the team earned a national place finish of 11th and an assent up the national polls to as high as No. 6 in the nation.

“Alyssa is a great addition to our program,” Skinner said. “She has a great sense for the game, a high IQ, and really sets a `hitters’ ball. With her only having been here a few weeks, I am blown away by how fast she has fit into our team culture.”

Gergins dished out 989 assists and logged 242 digs in her second season with the Mustangs. She passed out a career-high 50 assists against Cal State San Marcos, and averaged 15.0 assists per set against Southern Oregon.

In her first season at Master’s College, she passed out 646 assists, logged 157 digs and tossed up 40 service aces en route to helping the Mustangs to a 20-15 overall clip.
