LEXINGTON, Ky. — A.J. Reed and Max Kuhn each went 2-for-2 for Blue and junior Lucas Witt reached base twice and stole home plate for Black, in a fall five-inning scrimmage, that ended in a 2-2 tie, on a gorgeous Tuesday afternoon at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
The five-inning scrimmage ended in a 2-2 tie, as the Black team plated two runs in the top of the third and Blue got single runs in the first and fourth innings. Reed, the first consensus freshman All-America honoree in program history in 2012, cranked two doubles in his two at bats, a gapper into left-centerfield and a line-drive painted down the rightfield line. Kuhn, a sophomore from Zionsville, Ind., finished 2-for-2 with a pair of singles and an RBI for Blue, hitting No. 4 in the order behind Reed.
A native of Lexington, Ky., Witt went 1-for-1 with a walk and a single into centerfield, scoring after stealing home in the third inning. Also for Black, J.T. Riddle got hit by a pitch, catcher Zach Arnold singled into centerfield and outfielder Kyle Barrett drew a walk.
In addition to the two-hit games from Reed and Kuhn, Blue got a single from freshman catcher Greg Fettes.
On the mound, freshman righty Tyler Cox tossed three innings, allowing one run for the Black team with a strikeout. Sophomore right-hander Taylor Martin also worked two innings, allowing one run and striking out three.
For Blue, southpaw Corey Littrell started and tossed two shutout innings, getting out of a first-inning jam after walking Witt to lead off and hitting Riddle with no outs. Freshman 6-foot-8 right-hander Matt Pope then worked two innings with two runs allowed in his first frame. Junior righty Trevor Gott – the UK single-season record holder for saves – tossed the fifth inning, with two strikeouts and a weak pop out.
On Friday, UK will play a seven-inning game at 2:05 p.m. ET, on Saturday an eight-inning scrimmage at 12:30 p.m. ET and on Sunday a six-inning scrimmage at 12:30 p.m. ET at Cliff Hagan Stadium. All game times are subject to change.
After a historic 2012 season, Kentucky had a school-record nine players picked in the MLB Draft – second most in the nation – and led the NCAA in players in the Cape Cod League or with the USA National Team. UK returns a talent-laden group in 2013 and welcomes in the No. 11 recruiting class in college baseball. UK returns consensus freshman All-America honorees Austin Cousino and Reed, Littrell – an All-Southeastern Conference starting pitcher – and a bullpen that went 40-0 when leading after seven innings a year ago.
