LEXINGTON, Ky. – Coming off a double-overtime victory over LSU on Sunday in Baton Rouge, La., the University of Kentucky women’s soccer team earned a 2-2 draw with the sixth-ranked team in the country in Texas A&M on Friday night as the Wildcats got two goals from freshman Kelli Hubly.
“I just thought it was such a fantastic game,” UK head coach Jon Lipsitz said. “Texas A&M is just pure class. Getting to know we are getting to play them every year is only going to make our program better. That’s what I want from a big-time match-up.”
The scoring commenced in the 52nd minute when Hubly was in the right place at the right time as fellow newcomer Cara Ledman hit the right post on the initial shot, and the ball came back out free to the middle of the six. Hubly tallied her third goal of the season when she buried the ball into the back of the net off the rebound giving the Wildcats the early 1-0 lead.
Texas A&M responded quickly, tallying the equalizer just 14 minutes later in the 66th minute as Kelley Monogue rifled a shot into the upper 90 from about 23 yards out. The shot was magnificent, as Monogue was even with the UK back line and powered a shot past a diving Kayla Price.
The 1-1 score would last all of 14 minutes as Hubly struck once again. The Elk Grove, Ill., native was the finishing touch on a great team goal with Caitlin Landis and Courtney Raetzman recording assists on the tally. The ball came in from about 35 yards out when Landis received the ball, shook defenders and found a running Hubly through the middle of the box.
The goal was Hubly’s second of the game, and fourth of the season as she now has 10 points only 11 games into her freshman campaign. Fellow freshman Raetzman also continued her five-match point streak tallying her team-high 11th point on the season.
Texas A&M would score the game’s final goal, and the equalizer, as the clock struck 84 minutes when Monoque found gold on the back end of a set piece after a Kentucky handball was called about 28 yards from goal. Aggie forward Meghan Streight came through with the assist as the scoring closed.
The two overtime periods saw a combined two shots between the two sides, while Kentucky recorded the lone corner kick in the extra sessions.
Sophomore Kayla Price kept her undefeated season alive, earning the decision and improving to 1-0-1. The Lexington, Ky., native was only forced to make three saves while facing 16 shots. TAMU keeper Jordan Day earned the draw, playing all 110 minutes in the decision to move to 10-1-1.
The Wildcats return to action Sunday afternoon in Lexington as the Cats face off against the Alabama Crimson Tide in the front end of a doubleheader with UK men’s soccer at Noon ET.
