MONTEREY, Calif. – The University of Kentucky men’s golf team fired an 8-under-par 280 in the final round of the Saint Mary’s Invitational, claiming second place in the event. The Wildcats entered the day in fourth before carding the lowest round of the tournament for the second consecutive day. UK finished the event at 3-over-par 867.

The host Saint Mary’s took home the trophy with a team score of 4-under-par 860.

“This team has heart,” head coach Brian Craig said. “To move from 10th place after the first round to second place, shows their character. I can’t wait to see what happens when we learn how to start an event as well as we finish them.”

Stephen Powers continued his solid play with a 3-under par 69 on Tuesday. The junior sank six birdies on the day, including three on both the front and back nines. After carding an 8-over round to open the tournament, the Naperville, Ill., native shot 9-under the last two rounds to end the invitational tied for sixth overall at 1-under.

Junior Cody Martin posted the lowest round of the day for the Cats, with a 4-under-par 68. The Union, Ky., native avoided bogeying a hole, while posting 14 pars and four birdies on the afternoon. Martin started the day tied for 38th but climbed into a tie for 17th at 3-over for the tournament.

“How about the comeback Stephen Powers had,” Craig continued. “He shot 80 in the first round and bounced back with a 66 and a 69 in the last two rounds. A shout out to Cody Martin as well. A final round of 68 was huge for this team.”

Senior Chase Parker recorded the third under par round for the Cats on Tuesday with a 1-under 71. Parker began on hole No. 7, where he pared the first three holes before birding 10 and 11. The Augusta, Ga., native sank his third birdie of the day on No. 3 and finished the tournament tied for 32nd at 8-over-par.

David Snyder posted an even par afternoon, which included four birdies on the back nine. The sophomore concluded the tournament at even par and was the second UK golfer to finish in the top-10, where he was tied for eighth.

Sophomore Will Bishop concluded the invitational tied for 49th at 13-over. Joseph Barr competed as an individual in the event, finishing tied for 56th at 15-over.

Next up for the Cats is the Jack Nicklaus Invitational, Oct. 8-9 in Dublin, Ohio. For more information on the University of Kentucky men’s golf team please visit UKathletics.com and follow on twitter @UKMensGolf.
