UK Game Notes
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Fresh off an exhilarating win at No. 18 Louisville, the Kentucky men’s soccer team returns home to host East Tennessee State on Wednesday, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. ET at the UK Soccer Complex.
Kentucky (2-4-0) will host ETSU on Wednesday night, with the Wildcats coming off a thrilling rivalry win at UofL, a game played in front of 5,583 fans – the largest crowd to ever witness a UK men’s soccer game.
In the win, UK got a free-kick goal from senior co-captain Matt Lodge in the 39th minute and stellar defensive play from goalkeeper Jack Van Arsdale in his first career shutout.
UK also enjoyed splendid play from several Wildcats in the win over UofL, including defenders Dylan Asher, Jacob Speed, Steven Perinovic and Jacob Kemper, in addition to co-captain Cameron Wilder, who was a stabilizing force in the midfield. Following the win, Lodge was named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week, with Van Arsdale named C-USA Defensive Player of the Week and as a member of the College Soccer News National Team of the Week, honoring his outing as the best among NCAA keepers last week.
On the year, UK has eight goals in six games, owning 11.5 shots per game and a 42-33 advantage in corner kicks. The Wildcats have been led offensively by Lodge, who has three goals in the first six games of 2012, giving him 20 career tallies and 55 points. Junior Tyler Riggs has two goals and one assist, while senior Charley Pettys owns two goals and freshman Bryan Celis has one goal. Freshman Kristoffer Tollefsen has a club-best two assists, with Jacob Kemper and Jacob Scearce each adding an assist.
In goal, Van Arsdale and freshman standout Callum Irving have split time, with both starting three games. Van Arsdale owns a 1.12 goals-against average in 320 minutes, with 15 saves. Irving, a native of Vancouver, British Columbia, has one clean sheet and has saved seven shots in his three starts, with a 2.00 goals-against average.
ETSU (4-2-0) has played a challenging schedule to open up the 2012 season and own an impressive 1-0 overtime win at over No. 17 UAB over Labor Day Weekend. The Bucs have totaled eight goals and 1.33 goals per game, with 15.7 shots per game and a staggering 51-28 edge in corner kicks. ETSU has wins over UNC-Greensboro, Presbyterian, UAB and Radford, suffering losses at Appalachian State and at Davidson. Before a tough loss at Davison, ETSU had tied a program record (four) for the most consecutive non-conference wins.
Individually, David Geno has four goals and one assist to lead the club. Luis Calzadilla has two goals, while Franck Doumbe and Colin Pugh each have three assists. Nate Hodges and Emmanual Wilson have added the other two ETSU tallies. In goal, Ryan Coulter has a sparkling 0.77 goals-against average with 24 saves and two shutouts.
UK will be meeting ETSU for the first time in program history. Besides its win at UofL, UK has faced first-time opponents in each contest to open the season.
