West Point, Miss. – After posting the fifth lowest round in program history with a team score of 2-over-par 290, the University of Kentucky women’s golf team came from behind to win the Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational by two strokes.
UK shot 14-over-par 878 for the tournament, topping Tulane and Arkansas who shot 16-over and 18-over, respectively. Sitting in second and third place for much of the tournament, the Wildcats found themselves six strokes back at 19-over about halfway through the third round. The Cats turned it on down the stretch, capturing the title and winning their second tournament under third-year head coach Golda Johansson Borst.
“I could not be more proud of this group of girls,” Borst said. “We have worked hard every day and we never stopped fighting today. I can’t say enough about their passion and their belief in themselves and in this team.”
Freshman Cylia Damerau led the Wildcats for the second consecutive day, posting a career-low 2-under-par 70. Damerau had a clean scorecard for the majority of the day, recording just one bogey and sinking three birdies. The Cham, Switzerland native finished the invitational in ninth place with a score of 4-over-par 220. Damerau ended the first day in a tie for 41st place before shooting 3-under the next two rounds.
Ashleigh Albrecht was the most consistent player for the Cats throughout the tournament, completing the third day with an even par round. After a double bogey on hole No. 6, the senior recovered to birdie holes 14 and 15 to return to even on the afternoon. Albrecht finished with the sixth-lowest score of the tournament at 1-over-par 217.
Liz Breed also recorded an even par round, finishing in 12th place at 6-over-par 222 for the invitational. Breed struggled in the early going on Wednesday, double bogeying holes 5 and 7. However, the junior found her stroke, recording five birdies the rest of the way, including four straight on holes 13, 14, 15 and 16 to help propel the Wildcats into first.
Heather Lott carded a 4-over today to finish in a tie for 13th overall at 7-over-par 223 for the tournament. Freshman Meghan McDougall wrapped up the event in 34th place at 15-over for the week. Sarah Harris had a solid day for UK as an individual, carding a 1-over-par 73. The freshman ended the invitational tied for 16th at 8-over.
Kentucky seeks to build off the tournament victory when they return to action Sept. 21-23 at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Nashville, Tenn.
