LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky women’s soccer team will continue its four-game homestand to begin the 2012 season Friday night, as the Wildcats host in-state foe Eastern Kentucky for a game that will begin at 7:00 p.m. ET at the UK Soccer Complex.

The UK women’s soccer team (2-0-0) got two late goals to pull out a dramatic 2-1 win in their home-opener over in-state rival Eastern Kentucky (0-2-0) at the UK Soccer Complex Tuesday night. “We have been working very hard on playing faster,” UK head coach Jon Lipsitz said. “I can tell you that the 11v11 scrimmage that we had in training on Wednesday was the best that we have ever had since I got here. So, we are looking to get better everyday and if we continue to do that, we can be a pretty good team by the end of the season.”
Kentucky won its first game Friday night 2-0 over Coastal Carolina in a game that saw the Wildcats outshoot the Chanticleers 21-1 over the 90 minutes of play. Junior Kayla King and sophomore Kayla Price combined to record the shutout as neither party was forced to make a save in the winning effort. UK’s goals were tallied off the boots of junior Ashley VanLandingham and freshman Cara Ledman who provided the insurance goal in the 62nd minute.
“First of all, we need to work on serving and finishing. We had clipped about 40 times where we had a chance to score (Friday vs. CCU) and just either didn’t hit a good ball or didn’t make a good enough run into the box. We are creating on opportunities and we have to do a better job in that area.” Lipsitz said.
UK and EKU tangled last year in a game that resulted in a 2-1 UK win in one of the best games of the season. The Wildcats trailed 1-0 with just over 10 minutes to go and grabbed a late goal by Kelsey Hunyadi to tie the game in the 81st minute, before Arin Gilliland found the golden goal in the 88th minute. Kentucky leads the all-time series with Eastern Kentucky 3-0-0, with a 14-1 goal differential combined in the three meetings.
Kentucky will be looking to start the regular season with a 2-0 record for the fourth consecutive season under head coach Jon Lipsitz.
EKU is 2-0-0 on the season, tallying wins last weekend against UNC-Asheville (2-1) and Robert Morris (1-0 OT).
