LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky women’s soccer team opens the 2012-13 UK Athletic schedule Friday evening with a non-conference match-up against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. The season opener will commence at 7:00 p.m. ET at the UK Soccer Complex.

UK is coming off one of the best seasons in school history in which the Wildcats advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006, hosting a first-round game in Lexington for the first time since 1999.

Kentucky returns nine of 11 starters, including All-Southeastern Conference Second Team and Freshman Team member, Arin Gilliland. The returning sophomore, who hails from the Bluegrass state, charted four goals in her freshman campaign, including two game-winning goals.

Also returning up front for the Wildcats is junior Caitlin Landis, who is the leading returning goal scorer for Kentucky. Landis scored six goals in 2011, coupled with two assists to account for 14 points. Landis will be joined by sophomore Molly Huber, who scored two goals in 2011, as well as freshman Kelli Hubly and Cara Ledman.

In the midfield, UK will be looking to replace one of the greatest players in Kentucky soccer history, Kelsey Hunyadi. Hunyadi chalked up 14 goals and 10 assists in 2011, setting multiple school records along the way. Kentucky will be relying on junior Danielle Krohn, sophomore Stuart Pope, senior Alyssa Telang and freshman Courtney Raetzman to carry the load in midfield.

The Wildcats also return three of four starters from a year ago on the back line. UK allowed a mere 26 goals in 2011, while only conceding 74 corner kicks.

Kentucky and Coastal Carolina met for the first time in 2010, resulting in a 4-0 UK victory. The Wildcats are 10-6-4 in season openers and 14-3-3 in home openers in school history. Kentucky will be looking for its fourth consecutive season-opening win, after claiming shutouts each of the past two seasons, and a 2-1 win in 2009.

Friday night’s game will be the first game under the lights at the UK Soccer Complex with the addition of a new video board that was installed over the summer.

UK soccer fans will again have unprecedented access to the program as UKathletics.com will once again be streaming all home games of the 2012 season live online. In addition, Kentucky was selected for a nationally-televised game with defending SEC champion South Carolina. The game will air live on Fox Sports South beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET on Oct. 19.

On Friday night, Kentucky fans will be treated to free UK women’s soccer posters and schedule key tags, as well as noise shakers to celebrate the commencement of the 2012 season.
