LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky men’s and women’s track and field teams concluded a busy weekend Saturday at the Pepsi Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla., and the Bellarmine Invitational and Multi Events in Louisville, Ky. The Wildcats saw career-best times and marks at each meet, including several at one of the nation’s premier track and field competitions, the Florida Relays.

Freshman Bradley Szypka had a strong showing in the men’s shot put at the Florida Relays. The Curtice, Ohio, native threw a career-best 16.62m/54-06.50 to finish third-place in the event. Szypka’s throw is the best by a Wildcat this outdoor season.

Kentucky’s youthful 400-meter relay team of freshmen Tamyah Pipkin and Keilah Tyson, junior Shiara Robinson and sophomore Kayla Parker won its heat and finished with the 15th fastest time overall, crossing the finish line in 45.59. The Wildcats’ time is their fastest in the event this season.

The Wildcats finished 17th with a time of 3:41.20 in the 4x400m relay later in the day. Paced by an equally youthful team as the 400m relay team, Robinson, sophomore Julie Nunn, freshman Angelica Whaley and freshman Devinn Cartwright recorded Kentucky’s fastest time in the event of the outdoor season.

Sophomore Andrew Evans finished third in the men’s discus throw. Evans recorded his best mark of the event on his final throw (52.96m/173-09).

Kentucky’s quartet of Trent Halasek, Adam Kahleifeh, Robert Scharold and Josh Nadzam finished fourth in the 13-team field at the men’s 4x800m relay. The Wildcats crossed the line in 7:33.46.

In the men’s 4,000m distance medley, Keffri Neal, Ben Mason, Halasek and Jared Phillips led Kentucky to a sixth-place finish with a time of 10:02.53.

In Louisville, Ky., at the Bellarmine Invitational and Multi Events, junior sprinter Ben Mason stole the show with a first-place finish in the 400m dash and a second-place finish in the 200m dash. Mason ran a season-best time of 48.52 in the 400m, following it up with a 21.39 in the 200m. Mason’s time of 48.52 in the 400m is the best by a Wildcat this year.

The Wildcats competed very well in the women’s 1,500m run in Louisville. Senior Megan Broderick, competing in the first outdoor race of her career, finished second with a time of 4:45.92. Junior Katy Achtien followed Broderick with a third-place time of 4:50.65, and sophomore Anna Bostrom clocked a 4:57.14 to finish fourth.

In the men’s high jump, freshman Ryan Ratliff recorded a career-best mark of 1.93m/6-04.00 en route to finishing second in the event. Fellow freshman Todd Nibbs tied his season-best mark set last week at the Texas Relays, clearing 1.83m/6-00.00.
