FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – Senior Tyler Reed posted a 1:34.96 in the men’s 200-freestyle on Friday night to earn an 11th-place finish in the event at the 2012 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, while sophomore diver Greg Ferrucci continued to impress at his first NCAA Championship, recording a top-10 finish in the men’s three-meter springboard competition.
Reed swam a 1:34.98 in the preliminary round, finishing just a fraction off of the pace to qualify for the finals of the event. The senior and native Kentuckian then managed to shave .02 off of his morning swim to garner an 11th-place finish overall in the country.
“Tyler had a great swim in the 200,” UK head swimming coach Gary Conelly said. “I think the 100-freestyle bodes well for him tomorrow. That is his best event. This 200 performance shows that he will have plenty of endurance for the back half of the race tomorrow. On the diving side, Greg Ferrucci has been outstanding. He isn’t feeling 100 percent, so his scoring is a real tribute to his competitive drive. We are looking forward to some good performances tomorrow.”
Ferrucci was impressive again, earning a 10th-place finish by tallying a 422.40 in the consolation finals of the men’s three-meter springboard competition, making it the second night in a row that the four-time SEC Diver of the Week has finished in the top-11 in as many nights at the NCAA Championships.
“Greg was outstanding today,” UK head diving coach Ted Hautau said. “He dived in a real pressure-packed contest and hit some big dives. I’m pleased with the progress he has made and his ability to compete in the big moment.”
The 2012 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships will conclude Saturday with a full slate of competition at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center. Fans can watch the night session live on ESPN3.com with national coverage beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET.
