GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team continued play in its match against No. 2 Florida after facing postponement due to heavy rain. Kentucky (8-7, 0-4 SEC) faced a tough opponent in Florida (10-1, 4-0 SEC) and dropped the match, 7-0.
The Wildcats didn’t fall easily, though. The most impressive performance of the day came from Edmée Morin-Kougoucheff. The freshman faced the tough task of taking on 18th-ranked Joanna Mather and began the match on fire. Her persistence won her the first set, 6-4. In the second set, however, Morin-Kougoucheff could not stop Mather as she grabbed the set, 6-0. The match went into a third set and required a tiebreaker, which Mather won, 10-4.
Prior, in doubles play, all three Wildcats doubles duos gave a valiant effort against the Gators. No. 55 Khristina Blajkevitch and Jessica Stiles faced No. 13 Sofie Oyen and Allie Will and grabbed 5 games. Although it wasn’t enough to take the victory, the pair proved their worth in their, 8-5, battle.
Sophomores Cece Witten and Marni Venter participated in an even closer match against Alexandra Cercone and Olivia Janowicz. The pair put up a fight, coming close to grabbing a win but the Gators ultimately took the victory, 8-6.
The Cats next face the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Fla. at 5 p.m. ET.
