LEXINGTON, Ky. — Former University of Kentucky football stars Winston Guy and Danny Trevathan are one step closer to realizing their dreams of playing in the National Football League as both players have been invited to and will take part in the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine. The event runs Feb. 22-28 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind.

The NFL Scouting Combine is held each February and involves hundreds of the best college football players. The seven-day event consists of executives, coaches, scouts and doctors from all 32 NFL teams, who will conduct intense, four-day job interviews in preparation for the upcoming NFL Draft. On top of the interview process, each player will go through the following measurable drills: 40-yard dash, bench press, vertical jump, broad jump, three-cone drill and shuttle run.

Trevathan’s combine started Friday, while Guy’s will begin Saturday. A complete schedule for linebackers and defensive backs is listed below.

A native of Leesburg, Fla., Trevathan made 143 tackles during the 2011 season for the Wildcats, leading the Southeastern Conference in tackles for the second-consecutive season. Trevathan ranked sixth in the nation in tackles with an 11.92 average per game and led the nation’s linebackers in fumbles forced (five), while ranking second among the nation’s linebackers in interceptions with four. Trevathan finished the season with 11.5 tackles for loss, three quarterback sacks, five pass breakups and two quarterback hurries.

Trevathan ended his UK career ranked 10th all-time on Kentucky’s career tackle list with a total of 374 stops. The All-American had a total of 20 games with double-figure tackles in his career, including a career-high 17 tackles in 2010 against Auburn, the eventual national champion, and also against Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Georgia.

Trevathan earned several postseason awards, including National Linebacker of the Year by the College Football Performance Awards. Trevathan was named first-team All-SEC by the Associated Press, Phil Steele College Football, Rivals.com and ESPN.com. He was also a second-team All-American by SI.com, third-team All-American by Rivals.com and fourth-team All-American by Phil Steele College Football.

Guy enters the combine after ranking second in the SEC last season with 120 stops. The native of Lexington, Ky., also ranked tied for 21st in the nation in tackles, averaging 10 per game. Guy had eight games of double-figure tackles during the 2011 season, including a high of 14 at South Carolina and against Tennessee. The senior was named National Defensive Back of the Week for the Western Kentucky game when he had 10 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and two interceptions. For his efforts, Guy was named a 2011 All-SEC second-team selection by Phil Steele College Football, Associated Press and league coaches.
