Honolulu, Hawaii – The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team began their second day of play in the Hawaii Invitational with singles play against Washington State. With two ranked opponents, the Wildcats entered play prepared for a battle.
Junior Jessica Stiles started off the day for the Cats, taking on 101st-ranked Luda Vasilieva. Stiles took the first set, 3-6 and battled through the second set but couldn’t stop Vasilieva, who won the set, 7-5. Vasilieva went on to win the third set, 6-1, to take the victory.
The most impressive play of the day came from Stephanie Fox, who was matched up against 123rd-ranked Elizaveta Luzina. The freshman handled the match like a pro, taking only two sets to defeat Luzina, 6-1, 6-3. Coming off of a very successful fall season for UK, it is no surprise that Fox handled her match so well.
Sophomores Khristina Blajkevitch and Misha Testerman followed suit. Blajkevitch faced Andjela Kankaras and won, 6-4, 6-1. Testerman took on Olga Musilovich and dominated with a final score of 6-2, 6-1.
Later in the day, Kentucky was paired with Hawaii for doubles play. Fox and Testerman were matched up against Aglae Van Den Bergh and Martina Kostalova and fought hard, but ultimately lost the close match, 8-6. Unfortunately, Hawaii’s two other doubles teams were too powerful for UK, as Hawaii finished the day with a sweep.
The Wildcats will wrap up play in the Hawaii Invitational tomorrow as they face Kansas in singles and WSU in doubles.
