LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky men’s and women’s track and field teams kicked off their 2012 indoor seasons Friday night at the E.J. Nutter Field House with the opening day of the Kentucky Invitational.

Junior Shelby Kennard had a strong day in the women’s pole vault. Kennard, who holds the program record in the indoor pole vault at UK, came close to breaking the record again Friday night. The Rockwall, Texas native set the school record at the Southeastern Conference Championships last season with a mark of 3.95 meters/12-11.50. She was able to clear 3.87m Friday night, but couldn’t clear the next height progression of 4.02m and finished sixth.

Also competing in the event was senior Samantha Stenzel and sophomore Michelle Canterna, who finished 11th and 17th, respectively.

Sophomore Andrew Evans led the Wildcats in the weight throw, finishing fifth with a throw of 16.74m/54-11.25. Evans’ top throw came on his fifth of six attempts. Freshman Bradley Szypka finished sixth with a throw of 15.82m/51-11.00.

In the women’s weight throw, senior Jennifer Svoboda made her return after redshirting last season due to injury. The Howells, Neb., native finished seventh with a throw of 16.22m/53-02.75.

A pair of freshmen led the men’s high jump, as both Todd Nibbs and Ryan Ratliff each placed fifth, clearing heights of 1.94m/6-04.25.

Sophomore Kayla Parker finished 10th in the women’s long jump, while freshman Daniel Buckles finished ninth in the men’s long jump.

Kentucky concluded the meet with the men’s 4x800m relay. Paced by the young quartet of sophomore Adam Kahleifeh, freshman Keffri Neal, sophomore Robert Scharold and freshman Sean Keane, the Wildcats finished second with a time of 7:41.68.

Arkansas senior Tina Sutej won the women’s pole vault for the Razorbacks with an NCAA Championships automatic qualifying height of 4.35m/14-03.25. Sutej, a 2011 finalist for The Bowerman, presented annually by the US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association to the most outstanding male and female collegiate track & field athletes in the nation, holds both the indoor and outdoor pole vault collegiate records. Sutej won the indoor and outdoor SEC Championship in the pole vault last year, and also won the indoor NCAA Championship in 2011 while finishing second outdoors.

The Wildcats will have a busy day tomorrow, beginning at 10:30 a.m. with the women’s high jump and women’s triple jump. The day will conclude with the men’s and women’s 4x400m relay. Twenty athletes from the men’s team are scheduled to compete Saturday, as well as 15 women.

In addition to Kentucky, 11 schools are competing in the Kentucky Invitational. On the women’s side, Kentucky is facing off against Arkansas, Bellarmine, Eastern Kentucky, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Marshall, Miami (Fla.), Middle Tennessee, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. The men’s team is competing against Eastern Kentucky, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Miami (Fla.), Middle Tennessee and Tennessee.
