LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky men’s and women’s cross country teams each concluded their respective seasons Saturday with top 20 finishes at the NCAA Southeast Region Championships held at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky. The men’s team, racing in a 10,000-meter race, finished in 16th, while the women’s team, competing on a 6K course, finished 12th.

The men’s team was paced by junior Luis Orta, who earned All-Region honors by finishing in 21st among the 218 competing runners. Orta demolished his previous collegiate best 10K time by nearly three minutes, crossing the finish line Saturday in 30:46.8.

Junior Chelsea Oswald ran her best time in the 6K in her collegiate career Saturday, clocking in with a 21:18.5 to finish 33rd. As a team, the Kentucky women finished 12th. Following Oswald, were sophomores Anna Bostrom and Taylor Wendler in 73rd and 75th, respectively. Bostrom’s time of 21:58.4 is a new personal best.

Sophomore Allison Peare finished 102nd, and senior Megan Broderick finished 104th, improving upon her first-ever 6K time ran two weeks ago at the SEC Championships by 20 seconds.

Competing in Saturday’s race were teams from the states of Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The race featured four teams on the men’s side ranked in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s top 30 poll, including N.C. State (No. 14), Eastern Kentucky (No. 20), North Carolina (No. 25) and Louisville (No. 26). The women’s side featured three teams ranked in the top 30, including N.C. State (No. 20), Virginia (No. 21) and North Carolina (No. 25).

N.C. State and Eastern Kentucky each qualified for the NCAA Championships by finishing in first and second, respectively. No. 14 N.C. State won the men’s race with 68 total points, and No. 20 Eastern Kentucky finished second with 139 points. On the women’s side, No. 21 Virginia and No. 20 N.C. State will advance to the NCAA Championships after finishing in first and second, respectively.

Orta concludes his sensational cross country season with staggering numbers and honors. The Caracas, Venezuela native was named a first team All-Southeastern Conference selection, a three-time SEC Runner of the Week honoree, finished in the top 10 in five of UK’s six races, and led the team in each race. His fifth-place finish at the SEC Championships is the best since current assistant coach Thomas Morgan won the conference meet in 2003.

Many of the men’s and women’s UK cross country runners will now turn their attention to track and field. The Wildcats will open the indoor season Jan. 13-14 by hosting the Kentucky Invitational at the Nutter Field House.
