LEXINGTON, Ky. – Through one round at the Mercedes-Benz Southeastern Conference/Pac-12 Challenge in Knoxville, Tenn., the University of Kentucky women’s golf team has shot a 24-over-par 312. Junior Ashleigh Albrecht is leading the Wildcats, sitting tied for fourth with a first-round score of two-under-par 70.
Coming off her first-place finish at the Bettie Lou Evans Fall Invitational, Albrecht is just two strokes behind the leaders after finishing the day with four birdies. Albrecht’s two-under-par 70 is tied for her lowest round of the year.
“Ashleigh’s performance today was outstanding and I could not be prouder of her,” said UK head coach Golda Johansson Borst. “She stayed calm and executed her game plan very well today.”
After one round of play, the Cats sit tied for 20th. Leading the pack is No. 1 UCLA with a seven-under-par 281. SEC foes Alabama and Tennessee round out the top three, respectively. With conferences going head-to-head, the Pac-12 leads the SEC with an average team score of 299.1 to 301.5.
“Today was a rough day for us. We got off to a bad start early, but settled down a little bit on the back nine. This course is tricky and if you miss the fairways you will get severely penalized,” said coach Borst. “We will learn from this and we will work on being more aggressive and committing to all of our shots tomorrow.”
Senior Ashlee Rose finished the first round with two birdies, leaving her at a five-over-par 77. Junior Heather Lott finished the first round at 10-over-par 82, while junior Betsie Johnson finished the day with an 11-over-par 83. Junior Megan Moir shot a 13-over-par 85 in the opening round.
The Wildcats look to improve their team standing in the second round on Saturday morning. Kentucky will tee off in 10 minute intervals beginning with Moir at 10:20 a.m. Moir will then be followed by Johnson, Lott and Rose with Albrecht wrapping up the tee times at 11:00 a.m. All times are Eastern.
