LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky women’s golf team came from five strokes back in the final round to win the Bettie Lou Evans Fall Invitational at the University Club of Kentucky on Sunday. Junior Ashleigh Albrecht and senior Ashlee Rose paced the Cats as Albrecht finished first overall and Rose finished tied for fourth.
Kentucky entered the third round five strokes behind the leader, UCF. After a third-round best score of 15-over-par 303, the Wildcats finished with a 60-over-par 924 to claim the team title. UCF finished in second with a 68-over-par 932. Augusta State finished third with a 76-over-par 940, while Michigan finished fourth with an 80-over-par 944 and Illinois finished fifth with an 81-over-par 945.
“What an unbelievable home event. I am so proud of my team and it is so rewarding to see them believe in themselves,” head coach Golda Johansson Borst said. “They work hard every day and we are starting to see the results of that.”
The first-place finish is the best finish for the Cats during head coach Golda Johansson Borst’s short tenure and the program’s first victory since April 2009, when the Cats won the Lady Mocs Intercollegiate.
Albrecht’s win is her second victory in her collegiate career, the first being as a sophomore at the UCF Challenge in February 2011. With five birdies on the day, Albrecht sunk a short putt on the 18th green to seal her one-stroke victory over UCF’s Kaitlyn Price.
“Words can’t even begin to describe what today’s win means to me,” Albrecht said on winning the tournament. “I am so proud to be a part of this special program and all the history behind it.”
Albrecht entered the final round down one stroke before shooting a two-over-par 74, bringing her total score to nine-over-par 225.
“I am so happy and proud of Ashleigh, her goal was to win this event and she fought hard all week to do so,” Borst said. “This team is getting better and better and we will take a lot of confidence from this as we continue on with our fall schedule.”
Three Wildcats finished in the top 10 with Rose finishing in a tie for fourth. Rose sunk a birdie on the 18th hole to finish five-over-par on the day with a 77. Rose’s fourth-place finish is the second-best finish in her career as she finished tied for second in the 2009 Lady Mocs Intercollegiate. The native of Lexington, Ky., finished the invitational with a 14-over-par 230.
Junior Betsie Johnson finished the invitational tied for eighth for her second-best collegiate finish behind her fifth-place showing at the William K. Warren Irish Invitational in October of 2011. With a total score of 17-over-par 233, Johnson finished strong with a two-over-par 74 in the final round, including four birdies.
Rounding out the Kentucky team, junior Heather Lott shot a six-over-par 78 in the final round to leave her tied for 21st with a 21-over-par 237. Fellow junior Megan Moir finished the third round with a nine-over-par 81, bringing her total score to 249. As an individual, sophomore Liz Breed shot an 84 in the final round, leaving her tied for 44th with a 244.
Kentucky will be in action again Oct. 21-23 at the Southeastern Conference/Pac-12 Challenge in Knoxville, Tenn.
