LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky men’s golf team was paced by a collegiate-best, 54-hole total of 7-under-par 206 from sophomore Cody Martin in its season-opening tournament at the Marshall Invitational in Huntington, W.Va., on Tuesday. The tournament was played at the Guyan Golf and Country Club (par 71, 6,573 yards).
Martin led Kentucky throughout the entire tournament, finishing in a tie for fourth place overall. Martin’s performance was highlighted by his collegiate-best round of 5-under par 66 Monday afternoon, and concluded Tuesday with an even-par round of 71. Martin’s final score at the Marshall Invitational was 206, 7-under par, marking his best 54-hole total in his collegiate career.
As a team, Kentucky finished in 11th at the tournament with a final score of 13-over par, 865.
“I don’t think we performed up to our standards in this tournament,” UK head coach Brian Craig said. “The good news is it is just one tournament and we will bounce back. We are at home this weekend for the UK Bluegrass Fall Invitational and will be ready to play. With that said, hats off to Cody Martin who is blossoming into a tremendous Southeastern Conference caliber player.”
Martin recorded the most birdies at the tournament with 17, and had the second-lowest scoring total on par 4s, shooting 6-under par. As a team, Kentucky recorded 48 birdies throughout the two-day, 54-hole event.
Sophomore Stephen Powers finished second on the team with a 6-over par 219. Powers was 4-over par on Tuesday to conclude his tournament. Senior Mads Kristensen finished second on the team with an 8-over par 221, followed by juniors Chase Parker and Seth Blann who finished 9- and 11-over par, respectively.
Junior Joseph Barr finished in a tie for first among individuals at the tournament with an even-par final score. Barr finished in a tie for 23rd overall, concluding his performance at the tournament with a 1-under par.
Freshman Will Bishop began his collegiate career with three consistent scores and a top-50 finish. A Lexington, Ky., native, Bishop carded a 1-over par 72 Tuesday to finish 5-over par for the tournament.
The Kentucky men’s golf team will hit the links again Saturday for the UK Bluegrass Fall Invitational. This will be the fifth time the tournament has been played, but the first time it’s been played in the fall. Kentucky finished in second place in the UK Bluegrass Invitational in April 2011, led by Stephen Powers’ second-round 6-under par 65. The tournament will be played on the Big Blue course (par 71, 7,013 yards) at the University Club for the fifth consecutive time.
