LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Kentucky men’s golf sophomore Cody Martin carded back-to-back rounds of under-par golf Monday at the Marshall Invitational and sits in a tie for second place overall heading into Tuesday’s final round.

Playing 36 holes at Guyan Golf and Country Club (par 71 – 6,573 yards) in Huntington, W.Va., Martin remained consistent throughout his play and finds himself just three strokes off the overall lead. Martin carded 13 birdies on the day, the most in the 87-player field, and tied for the second-lowest score on par 4s, going 5-under par. Martin was 2-under par (69) on his first 18, and followed that round with a 5-under par 66, the best round of his collegiate career.

“Cody Martin carried our team today and played superb golf,” UK head coach Brian Craig said. “We need to finish strong tomorrow and put four solid rounds together.”

The Marshall Invitational is a two-day, 54-hole tournament hosted by Marshall University. Kentucky, as a team, sits in eighth place after the first two rounds. The Wildcats carded even-par rounds of 284 in the first and second rounds, including 34 birdies. Virginia Commonwealth University leads the 15-team field with a score of 555 (-13).

Stephen Powers, a sophomore from Naperville, Ill., shot a 2-over par 73 in his first round, but rebounded with an even-par round of 71 in the afternoon. Powers currently sits in a tie for 37th heading into Tuesday’s round.

Kentucky’s lone senior, Mads Kristensen, shot a 1-under par 70 in the morning, followed by a 4-over par 75 in the afternoon and sits in a tie for 47th.

Junior Chase Parker, who led the Wildcats in 2010-11 with the lowest scoring average on the team, shot a 4-over par 75 in round one, and a 1-over par 72 in the day’s second round. Fellow junior Seth Blann shot a 1-over par 72 in round one, and a 5-over par 76 in round two.

Junior Joseph Barr played well as an individual Monday. Barr sits in a tie for 32nd going into the final round after a first round score of 2-under par 69 and a second round score of 3-over par 74. Also playing as an individual is freshman Will Bishop. Bishop, a native of Lexington, Ky., shot back-to-back rounds of 2-over par 73 to open his collegiate career. Neither Barr nor Bishop’s scores will count toward Kentucky’s team score.

Kentucky will finish out the Marshall Invitational on Tuesday, with 18 holes of golf beginning at 8:00 a.m. ET.

The Wildcats have played in the Marshall Invitational twice before in the Brian Craig era, finishing in fourth in 2002 and a tie for second in 2003. Both of those tournaments were played during the spring season.
