LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The UK women’s soccer team (5-0-0) ended their weekend trip to the Courtyard by Marriott Airport Cardinal Classic in Louisville, Ky., with a thrilling 2-1 win over the Baylor Lady Bears to claim the 2011 Cardinal Classic Championship.
“I just really wanted the players to have fun,” UK head coach Jon Lipsitzsaid. “I knew we were going to be tired, but I just wanted us to go out there and have some fun. Baylor is a great team and I just told them that we needed to go out there and battle hard and have some fun.
Kentucky scored first for the fourth time in the first five games of the season when senior midfielder Kelsey Hunyadiscored her team-high fourth goal of the season in the 22nd minute. Kentucky had been dominating play up until that point in the midfield.
The goal was pieced together with brilliant passing from Natalie Horner who reversed fields to a waiting Danielle Krohn35 yards from goal. Krohn then placed a perfect through ball down the center of the field where Hunyadi finished off the goal with a shot into the back corner of the net.
Baylor quickly tied the game up just four minutes and nine seconds later, with a goal from freshman forward Justine Hovden. Hovden had an easy finish from about 15 yards. The assist came from Christine Clark on the right side of midfield.
The first half ended in a 1-1 score line that saw the two teams combine for twelve shots overall, seven shots on goal and four corner kicks.
The Lady Bears came out of the locker room strong in the opening part of the second half, earning three corner kicks in the opening five minutes of the half. However, UK’s defense held strong and Baylor recorded zero shots on goal during the sequence.
Kentucky took the lead in the 84th minute off a corner kick. Hunyadi served in a gorgeous ball off the corner, and it was immediately headed into the back of the net by freshman Arin Gilliland. It was Gilliland’s second goal of the year (both game-winners), and Hunyadi’s third assist of the year.
The UK staff worked on changing up the set pieces in training this week, and the changes worked.
“All of the changes are not just me. It comes from (assistant coaches) Aaron Rodgers and Michelle Rayner. It’s a team effort, and I am proud to have them on my (staff),” Lipsitz said.
The three-point game for Hunyadi gives her a team-high eleven points on the season.
Hunyadi, Krohn, Alyssa Telang and Ashley VanLandinghamwere all named to the All-Tournament team.
UK will return home on Friday night to host the Tropical Smoothie Invitational at the UK Soccer Complex. Kentucky will play the nightcap on Friday night against in-state foe Louisville. Kick-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. Live stats and a live stream will be available via UKathletics.com.
