Kentucky (2-0-0) moved up to No. 21 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association top-25 after posting a 2-0 win over Dayton in the season lidlifter and a 2-1 comeback win over No. 9 Michigan. UK was spurred in both games by NSCAA Player of the Week Tyler Riggs, who netted three goals, including both goals in UK’s win over the Wolverines.
The UK Invitational will open on Friday at 5 p.m. ET with Evansville and IUPUI, before UK hosts Wright State at 7:30 p.m. ET. On Sunday, Evansville and Wright State will open the competition day at 12 p.m. ET, before UK and IUPUI kickoff at 2:30 p.m. ET. Both UK games will be available on UKathletics.com with live stats and a live video feed.
In the season opener on Friday, UK rode Riggs’ and C.J. Tappel’s goals late in the first half to the 2-0 win, getting a clean sheet from sophomore All-Conference USA goalkeeper Tyler Beadle. Tappel assisted on Riggs’ game-winning goal in addition to netting the insurance goal.
On Sunday, UK fell behind on an early Michigan goal, before Riggs came off the bench in the 78th minute to even up the game with a goal in traffic inside the six-yard box. Just under four minutes later, Riggs gave UK the lead with a world-class goal, streaking down the sideline and firing a low-lining shot that beat the keeper and landed in the far post side netting.
Through two games, Riggs leads UK with the three goals, while Tappel has added a goal and an assist. Junior Matt Lodge paces UK with eight shots, including four on target. Dylan Asher and Charles Pettys each charted multi-assist games on opening weekend. Beadle saved four shots during the weekend, allowing only one goal.
