CAPE COD, Mass. — Kentucky baseball standout pitchers Trevor Gott and Taylor Rogers have been named to the 2011 Cape Cod League All-Star rosters and Rogers will be the starting pitcher for the East All-Stars, it was announced by the league on its Facebook and Twitter pages on Friday afternoon.
Kentucky’s two star hurlers have dominated in the prestigious CCCL during the summer, with Gott ranking as the league leader in saves (eight), posting a 0.60 ERA in 13 relief outings for the Orleans Firebirds. A native of Lexington, Ky., Gott was named to the East All-Star team, along with Rogers, who has posted a 2-2 record and a 1.73 ERA in five starts for the Harwich Mariners, with Rogers tabbed as the East All-Star starting pitcher.
The game will be played on July 29 at historic Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox. First pitch at Fenway next Friday is set for 7 p.m. ET and will be televised live on Comcast SportsNet and broadcast on the radio on National Public Radio.
A former star at Tates Creek High School and the 2010 Gatorade Kentucky High School Player of the Year, Gott has hurled 15 innings in relief this summer for Orleans, allowing only eight hits and four walks, striking out 20. Opponents have hit .157 during the summer, with Gott totaling four saves of at least 1.1 innings. As a reliever for UK in 2011, Gott made 23 appearances and totaled two saves, coming against red-hot Utah in the 2011 Houston College Classic and vs. Arkansas in Lexington. Overall as a freshman, Gott totaled a 2-4 record and a 3.62 ERA, striking out 34 in 27.1 innings. Without two bad outings late in the campaign, Gott was dominating, posting a 2-3 record and a 1.38 ERA.
A native of Littleton, Colo., Rogers has made five starts for the Mariners, tossing 26 innings with 22 strikeouts and only three walks allowed, with opponents collecting 21 hits and owning a .212 batting average. Rogers is currently working on a 13-consecutive scoreless inning streak, including seven shutout innings in a 1-0 win over Gott’s Firebirds, earning CCL Pitcher of the Week honors. In his last start, Rogers – a 37th round pick in the 2010 MLB Draft out of high school – fanned seven in five innings without allowing an earned run.
Gott and Rogers are the sixth and seventh UK players to earn CCL All-Star honors in the last four years,
as Braden Kapteyn (2010), Chad Wright (2010), Chris Bisson (2009), Keenan Wiley (2008), Collin Cowgill (2007) and Antone DeJesus (2007) were previously honored.
MCCONKEY EARNS NECBL ALL-STAR STARTER HONORS
Kentucky infielder Paul McConkey has been named the second base starter for the 2010 New England Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game, it was announced.
McConkey, currently riding an 11-game hitting streak for the Holyoke Blue Sox, has batted .303 with 11 RBI through 26 games. A native of Knoxville, Tenn., McConkey was tabbed as the second base started for the West Division.
The NECBL All-Star game will be played on July 27 at Fraser Field in Lynn, Mass., with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m. ET, with the game available online at necbl.com.
