LEXINGTON, Ky. – Former University of Kentucky diver Lisa Faulkner, and sophomore Greg Ferrucci, the 2011 Southeastern Conference Male Freshman Diver of the Year, have each qualified for The AT&T National Diving Championships with first- and third-place scores, respectively, at the 2011 USA Diving National Preliminaries Zone A in Christiansburg, Va.
Faulkner, who closed out her final year with the Wildcats this past season, qualified for the national championships with a score of 265.75 on the women’s one-meter board to take first-place honors. Faulkner’s score surpassed second place by nearly 16 points and qualifies her for The AT&T National Diving Championships held in Los Angeles. There were 44 entries in the women’s one-meter board competition.
Ferrucci, who is coming off one of the most successful freshman diving campaigns in program history, entered the finals of the men’s three-meter diving competition with a second-place score of 379.45. The native of Huntersville, N.C., finished the finals in third place with a tally of 385.30. The top five divers in each competition advance to the national championships.
Sophomore John Fox, who returns to the Wildcats after having missed the 2010-11 season due to a season-long injury, finished the men’s three-meter preliminaries in 13th place. Fox scored a 310.30. Sophomore Corey Cowger also competed on the men’s three-meter board, finishing with a score of 276.60. There were 38 entries in the men’s three-meter board competition.
Competition will continue Saturday with the women’s three-meter board and the men’s one-meter. The AT&T National Diving Championships will be held at the campus of UCLA from Aug. 6-14.
