SECAUCUS, N.J. — Kentucky junior catcher Michael Williams has been selected in the 37th round of the 2011 MLB Draft by the San Francisco Giants and a total of seven UK signees were picked, it was announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Williams was the sixth Wildcat selected in the 2011 MLB Draft, with UK falling one selection shy of tying the school record with seven selections, set during the 2008 MLB Draft. UK junior right-hander Alex Meyer became the second-highest draft pick in program history as the No. 23 pick in the first round by the Washington Nationals on Monday night. On Tuesday, UK outfielder Chad Wright (ninth round, Detroit Tigers), Braden Kapteyn (15th round; Boston Red Sox), Taylor Black (16th round; Philadelphia Phillies) and Jordan Cooper (22rd round; Pittsburgh Pirates) were picked.
A native of Knoxville, Tenn., Williams shared the catching duties with UK sophomore Luke Maile in 2011, forming a dynamic backstop tandem. Owning one of the best arms in the nation behind the plate, Williams nailed 16 runners attempting to steal on the year and eight in Meyer’s starts. Williams hit .264 with 11 doubles, seven homers and 23 RBI during his 47 starts in 2011, emerging as one of the top hitting catchers in the league. A 6-foot-2, 210-pounder, Williams got hot late in the year, batting a team-high .358 (19-for-53) during the month of April, including five doubles and two homers in 15 starts.
Seven of UK’s signees were selected during the draft, including Zionsville (Ind.) shortstop Max Kuhn (24th round; Athletics), Terre Haute (Ind.) left-handed pitcher/first baseman A.J. Reed (25th round; Mets), Western Nevada right-hander Chris Garrison (28th round; Cubs), Lexington Catholic righty Taylor Martin (41st round; Rockies), Lawrence County right-hander Chandler Shepherd (41st round; White Sox), Heartland Community College (Ill.) lefty Jerad Grundy (42nd round; Mets) and Lamphere (Mich.) catcher Gregory Fettes (43rd round; Tigers).
After the Wildcats won the Southeastern Conference Championship in 2006, Kentucky has boasted a bevy of draft selections annually. Since 2006 and including the picks on Tuesday, the Wildcats have had a total of 40 players selected in the MLB Draft or sign a free agent contract. Since 1965, UK has had a total of 152 players drafted or sign a free agent contract, with 26-percent of the 152 total players coming since the 2006 season.
