FORT BENNING, Ga. — Kentucky rifle standout Henri Junghänel claimed the gold medal in the men’s 50m rifle prone at the 2011 International Shooting Sport Foundation World Cup, held at Fort Benning, Ga., last weekend.

Junghänel, a hero from Kentucky’s run to the 2010-11 NCAA Championship during the spring, went into the final round in fifth place, with first place two points ahead. The youngest shooter in the final, Junghänel made up ground on the challenging field in prone to win the match and secure an Olympic Quota Place for Germany.

“My final result was quite massive,” Junghänel said after finishing the match. “I don’t know how it happened, but it happened and it just feels great to win this final. To win an Olympic Quota Place was the most important goal to achieve here. I still have to go through national selection matches but I hope I will make the Olympic team. My next competition will be at the World Cup in Munich, where I will be in 20 days.

Junghänel totaled a 597 in prone during the match, before posting a 105.6 score in the final.
