LEXINGTON, Ky. – Senior Colin Boevers was named the Southeastern Conference male field athlete of the week for his SEC-leading performance in the discus throw at the Billy Hayes Invitational, announced by the league office Tuesday.
Boevers, the reigning SEC champion in the discus, threw a season-best mark of 58.39m/191-07 to claim victory in the event. The season- and event-best throw extends the seniors SEC-leading mark, ahead of Auburn freshman Stephen Saenz who owns a season-long mark of 183-05.
The Salt Lake City, Utah native ranks eighth in the nation with his season-best mark while holding a career-long distance of 192-01, set last season in San Diego. Boevers earned All-America honors last season in the discus throw for a ninth-place showing at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore.
In addition to the discus throw, Boevers put together a career-long toss in the shot put with a throw of 17.14m/56-03.00 to take second place, moving him up to sixth in the SEC. Boevers had thrown his previous career-best earlier in the year with a mark of 16.91m/55-05.75 in Louisville, Ky.
In his last SEC championship, Boevers will compete in both events with the shot put on Saturday and the discus throw Sunday at the Spec Towns Track in Athens, Ga. Select portions of Saturday and Sunday will be available live on ESPN3.com.
