LEXINGTON, Ky. – In a familiar venue that saw senior Colin Boevers set his career-best mark last season, the University of Kentucky track and field team’s throwing corps will travel cross country to compete in multiple throwing events at the UCSD Triton Invitational, beginning Friday in San Diego, Calif.

Over 70 schools will compete this weekend at the Triton Track and Field Stadium, in addition to several former Olympians including 2008 Olympic gold medalist Stephanie Trafton and American record holder Suzy Powell, both of whom will be competing in the women’s discus.

In addition to Kentucky, Tennessee will reperesent the Southeastern Conference in the event, with Arizona, Arizona State, UCLA and Stanford making a much shorter trip to partake in the competition.
Angell threw her then career-long of 173-00 in the dicus throw during the competition last year in San Diego. That mark ranked fourth on UK’s all-time discus list behind Emilee Strot with a mark of 174-07, but at the Sea Ray Relays last weekend she rewrote the record books once again.

Angell is coming off a pair of career-shattering performances at the Sea Ray Relays last weekend, with life-best marks in the discus and shot put. The native of Byron Center, Mich., had a long toss of 53.57m/175-09 in the discus throw, sending her into third place on UK’s all-time discus list. Angell improved her shot put mark by more than a foot to 15.13m/49-07.75, inching closer to UK’s top-five shot putters of all time. The senior will compete on Friday at 5 p.m. ET in the preliminary round of the discus competition with the top eight moving on to the finals.

On the men’s side, Boevers had his career-best throw of 192-01 in the discus, which still holds today, at the UCSD Triton Invitational last season. The seniors mark sits tied for fifth place on UK’s all-time men’s discus list with Andy Fryman, who set his mark in 2008. The native of Salt Lake City, Utah, will begin competition on Saturday at 5 p.m. ET in the preliminary round with the same format as the women.

Boevers is coming off two top-five finishes at the Sea Ray Relays, collecting third in the discus and fourth in the shot put. Boevers, an All-America honoree in the discus throw a season ago, threw 53.44m/175-04 to capture the bronze. In the shot put, the senior made a long toss of 15.97m/52-04.75 to grab fourth.

Senior Heather Smith and freshman Isiah Kent will also be in action, with Smith competing in the hammer throw and Kent in the discus and shot put.
