LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Kentucky men’s tennis freshman Tom Jomby has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week after an impressive showing in singles and doubles for Kentucky last weekend, the league office announced Tuesday.

The native of Nantes, France, was extremely impressive in both matches for UK, helping the Wildcats complete a 2-0 road swing against No. 15 Florida and South Carolina. The freshman’s biggest win came against the Gators when he clinched Kentucky’s first regular-season win against Florida in Gainesville since 1988.

Against the Gators, Jomby fell in the first set 6-4 and trailed early on in the second set before turning the match around by to earn a second-set victory. In the third set, Jomby earned a quick break to go up 3-1 before Andrew Butz would respond to take a 5-4 lead. Jomby earned a key win down 6-5 to send the set into a tiebreaker. After falling behind 2-0 in the breaker, Jomby turned up the pressure again en route to a 7-4 tiebreaker win, to clinch the UK victory.

The Kentucky freshman totaled a 3-1 record in singles and doubles throughout the week, including winning his doubles and singles match against South Carolina.

Jomby has been solid for UK all season, posting an 11-5 dual-match record, including a 5-3 mark in SEC play. The freshman has won six of his last seven matches.

Kentucky (20-6, 5-3 SEC) will be in action again Wednesday when it host No. 3 Ohio State at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex. Admission to the match is free.
