LEXINGTON, Ky. — After posting a season-high score in its last outing on Jan. 9, the Kentucky rifle team will return to action, hosting Alaska-Fairbanks on Wednesday at UK’s Barker Hall.

Kentucky (6-1) is coming off a unique match on Jan. 9, in West Point, N.Y., as UK was slated to face Columbus State. Due to weather issues, CSU had to catch an early flight, missing the match with UK. The Wildcats shot anyway, totaling a season-best team score and getting strong outings from Emily Holsopple, Henri Junghänel and Stacy Wheatley.

“It will be a unique situation coming off the West Point match,” UK head coach Harry Mullins said. “We need to duplicate that performance and the work ethic has certainly been there for the team during training. We haven’t had as much training time as last year, but we will see how that pans out with three matches in a four-day span and a 500-mile trip between them. But, this will be a good test for us to see if we can break those numbers that we are shooting for. Alaska is a very good team, a young, enthusiastic and hungry team.”

“We are ready for the match against Alaska-Fairbanks,” Holsopple said. “We came back early from break, trained all week, shot in New York and have gotten back to training for three matches in four days. We are eager to get out on the range on Wednesday.”

“This will be a good challenge for us,” Mullins said. “Hopefully we will have more points than they will at the end of it. Heather (Greathouse), Logan (Fox) and Henri have all had good training the last few days, along with the whole team. It will be real exciting to see if we can start duplicating performances day in and day out on a consistent basis.”
