LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky women’s basketball team returns to the friendly confines of Memorial Coliseum Tuesday, Dec. 7 when it plays host to Ohio Valley Conference member Tennessee Tech at 6 p.m. EST. The game will be broadcast live on the Big Blue Sports Network (radio and TV) and FSN South. The game also is available nationally on the ESPN Full Court package and ESPN3.com.
Season and single-game tickets are on sale now. Season tickets in the upper level chair backs, lower level bleachers and general admission season ticket areas are only $45. Lower level chair backs are $60 for the season. Single-game reserved seats are $7 (regardless of age) while general admission tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for youth/seniors. The No. 14/9 Wildcats (5-1) look to get back on the winning track after dropping its first game of the season on Sunday to intrastate rival Louisville, 78-52. The Cards hit 12 three-pointers and held UK to just 28.2 percent shooting en route to their sixth consecutive win over the Cats in Louisville. It marked the lowest shooting percentage for the Cats since their loss to Wisconsin in the Women’s Invitation Tournament on March 22, 2009.
“I was very pleased with how the players approached practice today,” UK Hoops Coach Matthew Mitchell said. “Tomorrow is an important game for us. I think preparation is so crucial to each game and when you don’t have a lot of time to prepare, the time you do have is critical. With the limited amount of time we had, I was pleased with our intensity and we need to bring that tomorrow night in order to beat Tennessee Tech.”
One of the bright spots for UK on Sunday was senior All-American Victoria Dunlap (Nashville, Tenn.). The reigning Southeastern Conference Player of the Year grabbed her 24th career double-double with a team-high 17 points and a career-high 23 rebounds. The 23 rebounds tied the single-game rebounding mark and the school’s third-highest rebounding total. It marked the most rebounds in a game since Valerie Still grabbed a school-record 27 rebounds vs. National College on Feb. 9, 1982, and Dunlap became just the fifth player in school history to grab 20 or more rebounds in a game.
Dunlap, who left the game with three minutes to go with an injury to her left knee, will be listed as probable for Tuesday’s matchup. She is UK’s leading scorer and rebounder with 15.8 points and a league-high 12.4 rebounds per game. Sophomore guard A’dia Mathies (Louisville, Ky.) and freshman guard Maegan Conwright (Arlington, Texas) follow in the scoring column with 15.0 and 10.2 points per game, respectively.
The Wildcats have won 20 consecutive games at home, including 16 in a row against nonconference opponents. The home winning streak is the school’s second-longest and ranks eighth nationally.
Tennessee Tech, in the midst of a three-game road swing, meets Kentucky in Lexington for the first time since 1987. The Golden Eagles (5-1 overall, 1-0 OVC) defeated Jacksonville State to open conference play (79-63) behind a 31-point night from junior and Lebanon, Ky., native Tacarra Hayes.
Hayes along with sophomore forward and Louisville, Ky., native Tiara Hopper lead the team in scoring this season, averaging 11.3 and 10.3 ppg, respectively. Hopper also is the team’s leader rebounder with 6.8 rpg.
“Tennessee Tech is a dangerous team because they have size inside and they have the ability to shoot three-point shots,” Mitchell said. “Coming off our last game, we had trouble guarding the three-point line so that will be important if we want to beat Tennessee Tech.”
UK is thought to lead the all-time series 7-6 although the schools disagree on the Jan. 22, 1975 matchup in Lexington. Tech claims a 98-58 win while Kentucky claims a forfeit victory.
Women’s basketball parking is available in the following surface lots and parking structures:
- Student Center Lot – off Euclid Ave
- MLK South Lot – between Lexington Ave and Martin Luther King Boulevard and south (towards Euclid) of the center drive lane. DO NOT PARK IN NORTH MLK LOT (closest to Wildcat Lodge) AS THIS IS A RESIDENTIAL LOT AND SUBJECT TO TICKET/TOW.
- Handicapped parking (first come, first served until full) is located in the northeast corner of the MLK South Lot; must have valid state-issued hang tag.
- Joe Craft Center North E-Lot – large lot located north of the Joe Craft Center and accessible via Lexington Avenue or Rose Street.
- Good Samaritan surface Lot – accessible off Martin Luther King Boulevard.
- Parking Structure #5 – entrances off Limestone and S. Upper.
- Doors to the Coliseum will open one hour prior to tipoff.
- UK Athletics encourages women’s basketball fans to arrive early to ease traffic and parking congestion around the Coliseum.
- Surface event lots (i.e. Student Center, Hardymon, MLK and Good Samaritan) typically reach capacity approximately 45 minutes prior to tipoff, at which point, vehicles should proceed to Parking Structure #5.
- The parking structure shuttle will begin one hour prior to tip and end one hour postgame. The shuttle picks up on Administration Drive, accessible via the sky bridge located on the third floor of Parking Structure #5.
