LEXINGTON, Ky. – After a season-opening 82-48 win over Morehead State on Friday, No. 9/10 Kentucky women’s basketball has little time to rest as it travels to Oxford, Ohio to take on the Miami RedHawks on Sunday, Nov. 14 in the Cats’ first road test of the season. Game time is 2 p.m. EST in Millett Hall and it will be broadcast live on the Big Blue Sports Radio Network with Neil Price.
UK (1-0) is the highest ranked team to ever play at Millett Hall.
“It’s always a challenge to see how a young team will react in their first game on the road,” UK Coach Matthew Mitchell said. “We were pleased to get a victory on Friday over Morehead State but we clearly have a lot to improve on. With four starters back from last season we expect Miami to be a much-improved team. It will be a tough atmosphere and it’s always difficult to win on the road.”
Despite a sluggish start offensively, UK’s tenacious defense forced Morehead into 36 turnovers and held the Eagles to just 27.8 percent shooting from the floor (15-of-54). Reigning Southeastern Conference Player of the Year Victoria Dunlap (Nashville, Tenn.) and SEC Freshman of the Year A’dia Mathies (Louisville, Ky.) scored 18 points apiece in leading the Cats over head coach Matthew Mitchell’s former school. Dunlap also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds to go with a game-high seven steals and four blocks. Four UK freshmen earned their first career points led by Bernisha Pinkett (12), Maegan Conwright (8), Samantha Drake (4) and Kastine Evans (4).
Kentucky extended its home winning streak to 19 games, which ties for the second-longest home winning streak in school history and currently ranks 10th nationally.
Sunday is Miami’s season opener after the RedHawks defeated Tiffin University in its lone exhibition game. MU returns four starters and six letterwinners from last year’s squad that finished 9-22 overall, 6-10 in Mid-American Conference play. That includes last year’s MAC Freshman of the Year and third-team All-MAC member in sophomore Courtney Osborn.
This is the 17th matchup between Kentucky and Miami. UK leads the all-time series 14-2, including a 6-2 mark in Oxford. The Cats have won four in a row against the RedHawks after defeating them 107-53 last season in Lexington.
UK is 26-4 vs. teams from the current alignment of the Mid-American Conference (MAC).
