Cat Scratches Preview: Joker Phillips’ keys to the game
Each and every week prior to a Kentucky football game, Cat Scratches will talk with head coach Joker Phillips about his of plan of attack. Without giving away too much of the game plan, Phillips will tell us his keys to the game, a key matchup and who Kentucky has to look out for on the opposing team.
Offensive key – Get out in space: “We’ve got to make plays in space and get some of our athletes in space. If Derrick Locke plays it changes our game plan a little bit because we’ve got to try to get him out in space a little bit more. We weren’t as worried about getting those other guys out in space as much as Locke. Locke is guy who has speed and is one of the fastest guys on our football team, so you want to try to get him in space so he can make plays for you.”
Cat Scratches’ take: Kentucky with Derrick Locke and Kentucky without Derrick Locke are two different teams. For the first time in more than a month, it looks as if Locke is going to play (Locke said he was going to play Wednesday). Phillips likes Vanderbilt’s defense, but the head coach will no doubt try to take advantage of a run defense that is giving up 180.1 yards per game, last in the Southeastern Conference. If Locke can return to his old self when UK was averaging 189.8 yards as a team with him, the run game should be an area the Cats can capitalize on. Remember, Kentucky ran for 308 yards on the Vanderbilt defense a year ago.
Cats Host Vanderbilt in Home Finale
After claiming its fifth win of the season with a 49-21 win over Charleston Southern last Saturday, Kentucky returns to SEC play for its home finale. The Cats are seeking to become bowl eligible for a school-record fifth-consecutive season when they play host to Vanderbilt Saturday on Senior Day in Commonwealth Stadium.
Kentucky was clicking on all cylinders in the win over CSU, claiming a season-high five rushing touchdowns and 10 tackles-for-loss. The Wildcats’ offense gathered 228 rushing yards, 274 passing yards and seven total touchdowns in the game. Sophomore running back Coshik Williams led the way for the UK rushing attack, totaling 96 yards and three touchdowns, while fellow sophomore Donald Russell had 110 yards and two touchdowns. Wide receivers Randall Cobb and Chris Matthews each chipped in over 90 yards receiving and a touchdown.
Vanderbilt heads into Commonwealth Stadium on a four-game losing streak, including a 55-14 loss last Saturday at home to Florida. All 14 of Vanderbilt’s points were scored in the second half, the first touchdown off a blocked punt and the second on a amazing catch in the corner of the endzone by Jordan Matthews.
The Wildcats led the all-time series against Vanderbilt 40-38-4, including having won five of the last six games. Last year, Kentucky defeated the Commodores 24-13 in Nashville. VU won the last meeting in Lexington, 31-24.
