LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Kentucky men’s tennis junior Eric Quigley and senior Brad Cox used a dominating performance in the quarterfinals of the doubles main draw to roll to a 8-1 victory and advance to the semifinals of the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Indoor Championships on Saturday.
Quigley and Cox were flawless in their quarterfinal match against Simon Childs and Andrew Carter of Louisville. The UK duo jumped out to an impressive 7-0 lead before Simon/Childs held serve to make it 7-1. But the Wildcat duo was too much, beating the Louisville tandem 8-1 and advancing to the semifinals.
The other Kentucky tandem in the quarterfinals was junior Alex Musialek and sophomore Anthony Rossi. The Frenchmen went back and forth in the match with second-seeded JP Smith and Tennys Sandgren of Tennessee before Smith/Sandgren took the match 8-4.
In singles, Kentucky won all five second-round matches and Quigley and Musialek won their third-round match to advance to the quarterfinals. Quigley defeated David O’Hare 7-5, 7-5 in the second round and then took down No. 12 seed Viktor Maksimcuk 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals. The Pewee Valley, Ky., native will take on Blake Bazarnik of Vanderbilt in the semifinals Sunday at noon.
Musialek was also impressive for Kentucky in singles Saturday, claiming two straight-sets victories. In the second round, Musialek beat Martin Arguello of Wright State 6-2, 6-4 before taking down Andrew Carter of Louisville 6-3, 6-4 to claim his spot in the semifinals. The native of France will play No.4 seed Ryan Lipman of Vanderbilt in the semifinals Sunday at noon.
Cox, Rossi and senior Alberto Gonzalez won their second-round matches Saturday before falling in the third round. Cox defeated Bryant Salcedo of Vanderbilt 6-3, 6-1 in the second round but lost to No. 3 seed Austin Childs of Louisville in the third round. Rossi had a similar road, defeating Jordan Smith of Memphis 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 before falling to No. 5 seed Rhyne Williams of Tennessee 6-1, 6-2, while Gonzalez took down Charlie Jones 6-2, 6-1 in the second round but fell to No.1 seed Smith 7-6 (5), 6-3 in the third round.
Play will continue Sunday with the semifinals of the doubles main draw and quarterfinals and semifinals of the singles main draw. The doubles semifinals will start at 10 a.m. with singles beginning afterwards. All action Sunday will be at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex.
