LEXINGTON, Ky. – The main draws for singles and doubles began Thursday for the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships, with Kentucky featured in three doubles matches and six singles matches.
Senior Megan Broderick and sophomore Jessica Stiles paced the Cats by each winning their respective singles matches and combining to win their doubles match as well.
Broderick dispatched Stephanie McLoughlin of Butler in singles play by a score of 6-2, 7-6 (6). Stiles put together a strong match of her own with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Amelia Harris of Louisville. Broderick will face Kayla Tuscany of Wright State in the second round and Stiles will go up against Chelsea Preeg of Vanderbilt.
In doubles play Broderick and Stiles moved to 3-1 on the fall season with a comfortable 8-2 win over Amelia Harris and Stefanie Villajuan of Louisville.
Broderick and Stiles will go up against Honiball and Thome of Miami (Ohio) in the second round. Honiball and Thome won their first round match by the score of 8-4.
The Cats also earned an 8-6 victory from the freshman team of Marni Venter and Misha Testerman. Venter and Testerman defeated Emily Hangstefer and Charlotte Bossy of the University of Tennessee Chattanooga.
Venter and Testerman will face off against Boren and Sorbello of Tennessee in the second round. Boren and Sorbello won their first round match 8-0.
Testerman, Venter and fellow freshmen Caitlin McGraw and Khristina Blajkevitch each fell in Thursday’s main singles draw but will all compete again Friday in the singles consolation draw.
Play will continue Friday with the main draw round of 16 doubles kicking things off at 8 a.m., followed by the round of 32 main singles draw and round of 32 singles consolation beginning at 9:30 a.m.
