LEXINGTON, Ky. – Sophomore Betsie Johnson sits in a tie for third place after day one of the William K. Warren Irish Invitational after shooting back-to-back one-over par 73s. Johnson is just two strokes off the lead heading into the tournament’s second and final day.
The Cats, playing in their second tournament of the fall season, were led by Johnson as they finished the opening day in sixth place out of the 13 teams competing at Warren Golf Course (Par 72 – 6,079 yards) in South Bend, Ind.
“Today was very much a marathon and not a sprint,” head coach Golda Johansson Borst said. “I think we did a lot of good things throughout the day. We are close to playing well, but unfortunately we struggled to finish our rounds.”
Johnson, a Nicholasville, Ky., native, shot a one-over par 37 on her opening nine before coming back with an even-par 36 on her back nine, parring each hole. In her second round of the day Johnson birdied her first two holes to get into red numbers. Johnson’s pair of 73s Saturday follow the one-under par 71 she shot in the final round of the Cougar Classic, the Cats’ first tournament.
“I am very proud of Betsie Johnson,” Borst said. “She played really well all day and she did a great job of controlling her emotions and staying in the present on the course.”
Sophomore Heather Lott shot an opening round five-over par 77 to finish the first round in a tie for 21st place out of the 75 golfers competing in the tournament. Lott had four birdies in her first round. Lott then shot a six-over par 78 in the second round and currently sits in 24th place.
Ashleigh Albrecht, who had the lowest stroke average on the team last season, finished her first round with an eight-over par 80. She improved two strokes in her second round with a six-over par 78 and sits in 37th place.
Senior Louise Ljungstedt, who is playing as an individual in this tournament, and junior Ashlee Rose each shot opening rounds of 82. Ljungstedt improved five strokes in her second round in shooting a five-over par 77. Ljungstedt is in fifth place among the 10 golfers competing as individuals. Rose also improved in the second round, bettering her first round mark by four strokes.
The biggest improvement in rounds came from Megan Moir. After shooting an opening round 86, Moir, a sophomore from Louisville, Ky., improved nine strokes in shooting a four-over par 76.
The Cats’ second round score of 306 was the fifth lowest second round score of the tournament. They currently sit 15 strokes off the lead, and six strokes out of third place.
“I know that this team will learn from today and be ready and excited to play tomorrow,” Borst said.
Play in the William K. Warren Irish Invitational will continue Sunday with an 18-hole shotgun start.
