LEXINGTON, Ky. — University of Kentucky men’s tennis junior Eric Quigley used a victory in the first set to propel him to a 7-6 (8), 6-7 (9), 6-1, three-set thrilling win over United State Tennis Association junior Bjom Frantangelo at the Land Rove Napa Valley Tennis Classic at Meadowood Resort in St. Helena, Calif., on Friday.

Quigley, ranked No. 8 in the International Tennis Association preseason singles polls, jumped out early in the match, scoring a win in the first-set tiebreaker 7-6 (8). After dropping the second set in a tiebreaker, the native of Pewee Valley, Ky., posted a dominating 6-1 win in the third set to claim the victory over Frantangelo. The win was the first of the fall season for Quigley.

Fellow junior Alex Musialek, ranked No. 32 in the preseason poll, fell in the opening day of competition 6-4, 6-3 to Southeastern Conference foe Bob Van Overbeek of Florida. Sophomore Anthony Rossi and freshman Maks Gold also fell in day one at Napa Valley. Rossi lost 7-5, 6-2 to No. 62 Abe Souza of Illinois, while Gold lost 6-4, 6-2 to USTA junior Mackenzie McDonald 6-4, 6-2.

All four UK players will hit the court again Saturday. Quigley will start the action for the second-consecutive day squaring off against Carlos Cueto of California at 1:30 p.m. Gold also plays at 1:30 p.m. against No. 102 JT Sundling of USC. Musialek and Rossi wrap up the day for UK on Saturday, with Musialek facing USTA junior Marcos Giron at 3 p.m. and Rossi going against USTA junior Mitchell Frank at 5 p.m. All times are Eastern.
