LEXINGTON, Ky. — In the first action of the fall campaign, several members of the University of Kentucky men’s tennis team scored singles and doubles wins at day one of the UNLV Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev., on Friday. Seven singles players and three doubles duos from UK took on singles and doubles foes from UNLV.
Kentucky played well in both singles and doubles in day one, scoring four wins in singles action and two wins in doubles. Senior Alberto Gonzalez, sophomore Anthony Rossi and newcomers Alejandro Gomez and Grant Roberts all posted singles wins. Gonzalez posted a straight-sets win over Bernard Schoeman 6-2, 6-0, while Rossi continued where he left off last spring with a straight-sets victory over Kasper Konyves 6-2, 6-3. Roberts would start his collegiate career with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Alex Bull, while Gomez also began his career with a win, beating Rene Ruegamer 6-7, 6-3, 6-3.
In doubles, UK received wins from two first-time doubles teams, getting wins from Gomez and Gonzalez, and Roberts and junior Matt Davis. Gomez and Gonzalez defeated Johannes Markel and Ruegamer 8-2, and Roberts and Davis took down Konyves and Charlie Alvarado 8-2.
UK senior Brad Cox and juniors Davis and Chris Leeper fell in singles action, while Rossi and Cox were the only UK doubles team to fall. Cox battled in singles, forcing a third set with a 6-4 win in the second before falling in a tiebreaker in the third set.
The Wildcats hit the court again Saturday to take on Pepperdine at 4 p.m. ET. Pepperdine started the UNLV Invitational against Fresno State on Friday, scoring five wins in singles and two wins in doubles.
