COLUMBIA, S.C. — After only allowing one goal in the first four games of the 2010 season, the Kentucky men’s soccer team was handed a 3-0 setback by No. 6 Connecticut in the opening tilt of the Gamecock Classic, on Friday afternoon at Eugene E. Stone III Stadium on the campus of the University of South Carolina.
Kentucky (2-2-1) entered the game having allowed only one goal in the last 411 minutes, dating back to the 2009 season-finale at eventual conference champion, No. 6 Tulsa. The Wildcats lone goal allowed in 2010 entering the game with UConn came 20 seconds into overtime against Loyola Marymount last Friday night. The high-powered Huskies entered the game averaging three goals a game and over 22 shots per contest.
The Wildcats will return to action on Sunday, facing Iona (1-2-0) at Stone Stadium in Columbia, wrapping up the Gamecock Classic. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m. ET on Sunday.
UK freshman goalkeeper Tyler Beadle, a native of Douglasville, Ga., saved three shots in the game, while UConn keeper Josh Ford totaled three saves in the contest. The Wildcats played a total of 20 players in the contest, with 14 players seeing action in their first collegiate season.
Kentucky freshman defender Sam Brooks led UK with two shots, including one on target. Ellis Vienne, Jordan Rose, Shaun Deliberato, Drew Midkiff and David Harrison each tallied shots.
UConn (4-0-1) got on the board with a goal in the 32nd minute, as Alan Ponce hooked up with Tony Cascio on a shot that found the net on the low left side.
The Huskies added a goal in the 35th minute, as Jossimar Sanchez gave UConn a 2-0 lead.
Kentucky allowed a goal in the 64th minute, as Max Wasserman stole the ball and after one touch, scored from 20 yards out for his first goal of the year.
