LEXINGTON, Ky. – The UK women’s soccer team plays its second of five straight home matches Wednesday and looks to remain perfect at home, hosting the Evansville Purple Aces at the UK Soccer Complex at 7 p.m. ET.
UK opened the home stretch with a solid defensive effort in a 1-0 win over Marshall on Sunday. Alyssa Telang scored her first career goal and goalie Sydney Hiance recorded her second shutout of the season and 17th of her career. She is now just two shy of third on UK’s all-time shutout list.
Despite the win, UK head coach Jon Lipsitz will be looking for a different attitude from his team in Wednesday’s match against Evansville.
“The biggest thing I’ll be looking for is a better competitive attitude than we had on Sunday,” Lipsitz said. “I felt like we were very casual and we took a lot of things for granted. I think we found out quickly as a young team you can’t turn it on and off. Since we didn’t come out with an attitude to compete it was hard to ever capture that.”
The Wildcats are 5-4-1 all-time against Evansville. The Purple Aces won the last meeting in 2008, 3-1 in Evansville. Of the last three meetings between Kentucky and Evansville, the average margin of victory by the winning school has been 2.67.
Hiance and the UK defense have posted three shutouts this season and rank third in the Southeastern Conference with only five goals allowed.
Junior Kelsey Hunyadi leads the Cats in goals scored with three and is tied with freshman Taylor Parker for the team lead in points with six. Parker has tallied a team-high four assists, which ranks 20th nationally.
“Taylor has a great understanding for the game,” Lipsitz said. “She reads things extremely well and she’s very technical. The reason she gets so many assists is because she reads what’s going on with the defense well and she can deliver the ball that needs to be played. What we’re looking for from her, is to be more of a factor by being willing to take players on more and being willing to create her own chances also. But there’s no doubt that she is extremely good at creating chances for others.”
