LEXINGTON, Ky. – Golda Johansson Borst has been named the head women’s golf coach at the University of Kentucky, Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart announced Thursday. Johansson Borst becomes the eighth coach in school history and fourth coach in varsity annals, after playing and coaching in the Southeastern Conference.
“I would like to thank Mr. Barnhart for this great opportunity,” Johansson Borst said. “It is a true honor and privilege to become the women’s golf coach at the University of Kentucky. I look forward to becoming a part of the tradition of the Wildcat community. I can’t thank LSU enough for the opportunity I received there, but I look forward to this new chapter in my life.”
“We are excited about everything that Golda Johansson Borst brings to our women’s golf program,” Barnhart said. “She brings SEC experience as both a player and a coach in our league. Golda also adds international experience and a personality that will engage the Big Blue Nation. She will make the University of Kentucky proud.”
Johansson Borst joins the Wildcats from LSU where she has served as assistant women’s golf coach since August 2007.
During her stay in Baton Rouge, La., LSU advanced to the NCAA regionals each of Johansson Borst’s three seasons, highlighted by a 12th-place finish at the 2009 NCAA Championship.
With Johansson Borst, the Tigers recorded a 295.40 team-stroke average during 2009, improving upon the 300.40 posted in 2008. The 2009 season also saw LSU victories at the Bryan Park National Collegiate and Mercedes-Benz Championship, as well as two individual titles. This past season, LSU earned an individual title while registering a 298.00 stroke average.
A four-year letterwinner for the women’s golf team, Johansson Borst graduated from Tennessee in 2006 with a degree in communication studies. At Tennessee, Johansson Borst served as team captain in 2005 and finished with a 76.19 stroke average. Additionally, Johansson Borst earned second-team All-SEC honors in 2006 and was named a three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll member. Johansson Borst’s top collegiate finishes came when she placed second in both the 2005 Bryan Park National Collegiate and 2006 Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational.
Johansson Borst and the Lady Volunteers advanced to the NCAA Women’s Golf Championship during the 2004-06 seasons.
A native of Karlshamn, Sweden, Johansson Borst competed for the Swedish National Golf Team from 1999-2003. With Johansson Borst, the team claimed medalist honors at the Girls Team European Championship in 2000, second at the Lady’s Team European Championship in 2001 and third in the Lady’s Team European Championship in 2002.
Prior to coaching at LSU, Johansson Borst worked at the Ritz Carlton Golf Club in Sarasota, Fla., assisting in course and tournament operations.
