GREENSBORO, N.C. –
The Kentucky track and field team began day one of the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds with one athlete advancing to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., and two more qualifying for a spot in tomorrow’s quarterfinals at Irwin Belk Track in Greensboro, N.C.
The Wildcats kicked off day one at Irwin Belk Track with nine athletes competing in six different events. in the North Carolina heat of 90 degrees.
The team was feeling the affects of the 90 degree heat but Rondel Sorrillo still managed to move on to the quarterfinal round in the 100m dash. His time of 10.36 landed him second in his heat and 12th overall. Sorrillo will make his attempt to advance to Eugene, Ore., at 6 p.m. tomorrow night.
In the women’s field events, Ashley Muffet and Jennifer Svoboda both advanced to the event finals in the shot put. Muffet finished in seventh place overall with a throw of 16.30m (53 feet, 5.75 inches) which advances her to the NCAA Championships while Svoboda just missed the cut by finishing in 13th place with a throw of 15.68m (51 feet, 5.50 inches).
Junior Sharif Webb also advances to quarterfinals tomorrow evening in the men’s 800m run. Webb finished with a time of 1:49.20 and second place in his heat to automatically qualify him for the next preliminary round.
Kristin Smith will open up competition for the Cats at 11 a.m. with the women’s hammer throw, an event that she comes into ranked fifth in the country.
Meet competition is set to resume at 10 a.m. Friday morning with the men’s javelin. Live results can be found at
