LEXINGTON, Ky. – The No. 24 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets advanced to the second round of the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships with an opening-round 4-1 victory over Binghamton on Saturday at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex.
Georgia Tech will play the winner of the Kentucky-Cleveland State match Sunday at 1 p.m. EST.
The Yellow Jackets won the doubles point and claimed victories at Nos. 2, 4 and 6 singles to advance.
Georgia Tech took a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. The Yellow Jackets won the first doubles match at No. 3 doubles when the 52nd-ranked duo of Eliot Potvin and Ryan Smith posted an 8-2 win over Binghamton’s Alexandre Haggai and Moshe Levy. The Bearcats pulled even at No. 2 doubles when Bastian Bornkessel and Ruben Devos defeated Georgia Tech’s Guillermo Gomez and Dean O’Brien 8-1. Georgia Tech sealed the point at No. 1 doubles when the 70th-ranked tandem of Kevin King and Juan Spir recorded an 8-3 win over the Bearcats duo of Sven Vloedgraven and Gilbert Wong.
Miguel Muguruza gave Georgia Tech a 2-0 advantage when he defeated Wong in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4 singles. Binghamton’s Jain pulled the Bearcats to within a 2-1 score when he posted a 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 win over Yellow Jacket Magin Ortiga at No. 5 singles.
Georgia Tech’s King, ranked No. 85 in the nation, defeated Binghamton’s Levy is straight sets 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
Spir clinched the match for the Yellow Jackets with a 7-5, 6-3 victory against Binghamton’s Devos at No. 6 singles.
Fourth-ranked Gomez of Georgia Tech did not finish his match with Binghamton’s Vloedgraven at No. 1 singles. Vloedgraven won the first set 6-4. Gomez was leading the second set at 4-1 when Georgia Tech clinched the team win.
Binghamton’s Haggai and No. 112 Potvin of Georgia Tech also were unable to finish their match. Haggai outlasted Potvin 15-13 in a tiebreaker to win the first set 7-6 when the team match concluded.
