LEXINGTON, Ky. – Coming off of the first annual `Kentuckiana’ border battle, the Kentucky track and field team travels to Gainesville, Fla., for the third-annual Tom Jones Memorial Classic at 1 p.m. ET Saturday at James G. Pressly Stadium at Percy Beard Track.
The meet will begin at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday with the running events starting at 5 p.m. ET. Meet admission is free and open to the public. For live meet results visit this live link for all times and event finishes.
The meet honors late University of Florida women’s head track and field coach, Tom Jones. Jones oversaw the Florida women’s program for 15 of its 35 years of existence. Jones passed away on March 21, 2007, after a long battle with cancer.
This is the second time Kentucky has traveled to Gainesville to compete this season. They were last there on April 2-3 for the Pepsi Florida Relays.
Kentucky enters this weekend’s meet coming off of a men and women’s team victory over Indiana University and the University of Notre Dame in the `Kentuckiana’ border battle in Louisville, Ky. The border battle featured a unique competition, pairing the Commonwealth’s Kentucky and Louisville verses Hoosierland’s Indiana and Notre Dame.
The Commonwealth walked away with a home victory over Hoosierland with the men winning 103-99 and the women 100-96.
The border battle featured junior David Banks landing a new school record with a leap of 15.67m (51 feet, 5 inches) in the men’s triple jump. Banks’ school record ruptures the 29-year-old record set by Bethel Ward in 1981.
Senior sprinter Jenna Martin topped the Hoosierland competition in both the 200m and 400m dash. Martin ran a 24.54 time in the 200m dash to take first place. Outrunning the competition with a 54.25 earned her the first place spot in the 400m dash.
Teams participating in the Tom Jones Memorial Classic include Brown, host Florida, Florida Atlantic, Jacksonville, Princeton, South Florida, UCF and UCLA (women).
