COLUMBIA, S.C. – The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team had a hopeful start, but was overcome by the Gamecocks of South Carolina 7-0 Friday at the Maxcy Gregg Tennis Center.
Kentucky’s veteran doubles team of junior Megan Broderick (Tampa, Fla.) and senior Christine Johnston (Columbus, Ohio) picked up an 8-7 win over Miljana Jocic and Rita Maisak on court No. 2. The Wildcat tandem jumped out to a great start at 5-1 before having to hold off the South Carolina pair to claim UK’s lone bright spot on the evening.
The top Blue and White doubles team of sophomores Caroline Lilley (Portland, Ore.) and Minnette Pienaar (Graaf-Reinet) came very close to defeating South Carolina’s Ana Marija Zubori and Dijana Stojic, before losing 8-6.
UK’s Johnston and Lilley each pushed their South Carolina opponents to super tiebreaker situations in singles action before losing. At No. 2 singles, Lilley lost the first set 6-4 to Stojic, but came charging back to take the second 7-6 (7-5). Stojic stole the super set tiebreaker 10-6 to take the match.
On court No. 3, Johnston took the first set from Anya Morgina 6-4, but the Gamecock sophomore would not give in and won the second 6-3. Morgina held off Johnston in super tiebreaker, 10-8.
Kentucky will face its second opponent of the road trip, Florida, on Sunday, April 4 at 1 p.m. ET.
