LEXINGTON, Ky. – Sophomore Brittany Cervantes blasted her eighth home run of the season and the second grand slam of her career in the top of the third, but it was not enough offense for the Kentucky softball team to overcome the hot-hitting No. 7 Georgia Bulldogs in a 17-5 loss Sunday at the UK Softball Complex.
Cervantes led UK offensively with the grand slam effort in the third inning. Kentucky charted seven hits on the afternoon with seven different players recording at least a single. The seventh-ranked Bulldogs flashed their offensive firepower with 17 runs on 14 hits including three home runs.
Kentucky drops to 20-14 on the season and 5-8 in league action. Georgia improves to 24-6 and 5-4 in league play.
Georgia jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with three runs in the top of the first. The Bulldogs scored on three hits, including a pair of doubles in the inning.
The visitors added two more runs in the top of the second on a two-run home run to stretch its lead to 5-0.
Kentucky came roaring back with a five-run third inning to bring the score to 7-5. Sophomore Erika Silence began the one-out rally with a single to the third baseman. Molly Johnson then laid down a masterful bunt to reach base placing two runners aboard. Natalie Smith’s single through the left side brought in a run. Megan Yocke then looped a single into right-center to load the bases. Cervantes capitalized on the bases being full when she drilled her eighth homer of the season over the left field fence for the second grand slam of her career.
The Bulldogs charted 10 runs off of seven hits in the top of the fourth to make the final margin at 17-5.
Kentucky will return to action when it takes to the road for the second time this season in SEC play. UK will travel to Starkville, Miss., to play Mississippi State in a three-game set beginning Friday, April 2 at 6 p.m. ET. The two teams will play a doubleheader Friday night before resuming play on Saturday for a single game to begin at 2 p.m. ET.
