COLUMBUS, Ohio – Six All-America swimmers will represent Kentucky at the 2010 Men’s NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships beginning Thursday on the campus of the Ohio State University. UK has two relays and four individuals with times ranking in the top-16 nationally heading into the event that begins tomorrow with first preliminary heats beginning at Noon ET.
All six of UK’s athletes competing at the 2010 Championships have garnered All-America status in their careers.
Senior Elvis Burrows is a two-time All-America selection as a member of the top-16 finishing 200-freestyle and 200-medley relays in 2009. Burrows is set to compete as an individual in a team-high three events including the 50-free, 100-free and the 100-butterfly. Burrows holds the 28th best time in his marquee event in the 100-fly.
Fellow senior Alex Forbes is a four-time All-America selection. Forbes was a member of four relays that placed in the top-16 nationally. He has earned All-America distinction with two relays in each of the last two seasons. He will compete in the 50 and 100-free events this week in Columbus. Forbes is ranked in the top-36 in both events.
Senior Kyle Greene is one of two UK athletes this week competing in three individual events. He had a season to remember in his final campaign at the SEC Championships when he led the squad with three top-eight finishes. He’s looking to carry that momentum onto the national stage where he is ranked in the top-28 in all three of his events. Greene holds the eighth best clip in the 100-free, the 16th best time in the 50-free and the 28th best time in the 200-free. Previously, Greene is a four time All-America selection all coming as a member of top-16 finishing relays in his junior season.
Another senior in Warren Grobbelaar returns to the NCAA Championships for third time in his career. Grobbelaar is a six time All-America selection, including an individual All-American for his top-15 finish in the 100-fly in 2008. After enduring an injury last season, Grobbelaar has returned to form in his final season. He will compete in the 50-free and 100-fly where he is ranked 18th in the nation.
Senior Eric McGinnis is a five-time All-America selection as a member of multiple top-16 relays. McGinnis will compete in the 50- and 100-free in 2010. He finished third in the SEC meet in the 50-free and holds the sixth best time nationally, which is a team best. McGinnis also ranks in the top-30 in the 100-free. This summer McGinnis helped the United States capture a gold medal in the 200-free relay at the World University Games, so combined with international success McGinnis is aiming for a memorable conclusion to his collegiate career.
Rounding out the competitors for the Blue and White is the lone junior in Tyler Reed. Reed is a seven-time All-America honoree including an individual accolade with his top-15 finish in the 200-free as a sophomore. Reed is set to compete in a team-high three individual events this week. He holds the 15th fastest clip in the 200-free, the 20th fastest time in the 100-free and the 32nd best mark in the 500-free.
Kentucky will also take to the lanes in 400-free relay where the squad is ranked fourth nationally and the 200-free relay where the team is ranked fifth in the country.
Each day of competition will see preliminary heats begin at Noon ET each morning with the finals set for a 7 p.m. ET start time. Live results and video is available through NCAA.com.
