LEXINGTON, Kentucky – The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team couldn’t quite manage East Tennessee State on Monday, losing 4-3 to the Buccaneers in the second of two home matches played at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center. The Wildcats defeated the Colonels of Eastern Kentucky 5-2 earlier in the afternoon.
The seasoned UK doubles pair of Christine Johnston (Columbus, Ohio) and Megan Broderick (Tampa, Fla.) continues its hot streak at No. 2 doubles, having won each of their last four doubles matches. The twosome beat ETSU’s Kelly Holtzhausen and Andra Voinea 9-7. UK’s No. 1 doubles team of Caroline Lilley (Portland, Ore.) and Minnette Pienaar (Graaf-Reinet, South Africa) won its second double match of the day, cruising past Paula Jaime and Karina Kedzo 8-1.
On the singles courts, the Wildcats faltered a bit. The Buccaneers took early wins on the back three courts. Court No. 3 saw Kentucky claim its first singles point. Johnston held a steady hand over Voinea succeeding 6-4, 6-4.
UK’s Broderick and ETSU’s Hotlzhausen battle throughout a three-set thriller at No. 1 singles that was decided by tie breaker, with the Buccaneer claiming 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) come-from-behind win.
The Wildcats registered their third point at No. 2 singles where Lilley won a three-set battle with Jaime 6-4, 4-6, 6-0.
Kentucky next will take on Auburn at home on Friday at 12 p.m. ET.
