LEXINGTON, Ky. – – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced the final list of All-America honors giving the University of Kentucky Track and Field team a total five athletes earning the title.
USTFCCCA announced 366 Division I student-athletes that will receive the USTFCCCA All-America honor. The awards are presented to individuals as a result of a national top-eight finish in last weekend’s NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.
In addition, the top eight finishing athletes among U.S. citizens from the NCAA championships gain All-America status.
The UK Track and Field team walked away from last weekends meet with three All-America honors. Seniors Ashley Muffet, Kristen Smith and Rondel Sorrillo all walked away from the championship meet with hardware and All-America honors.
Ashley Muffet scored a team high eight-points with her second-place finish in the women’s shot put. Muffet threw a mark of 17.31m (56 feet, 9.5 inches) to earn her the second All-America title of her career.
Kristin Smith finished in eighth place contributing one point to the women’s score with her heave of 19.86m (65 feet, 2 inches) in the weight throw. Smith is named All-America for the first time in her career.
Senior sprinter Rondel Sorrillo earned the sixth All-America title in his UK career with a fifth place time of 6.66 in the men’s 60m dash.
Sophomore Precious Nwokey and junior Sharif Webb were also added to the top honors list for their championship meet performances.
Nwokey is awarded the title for her 3,985-point performance in the pentathlon. Eclipsing her own personal record for the third time this season, Nwokey finishes in the top eight among U.S. women’s pentathlon competitors.
Junior middle distance runner Sharif Webb is granted the honor for his 800m run performance. His time of 1:49.78 put him in ninth at the meet but was fast enough to earn him an All-America honor, having one of the fastest eight American times at the competition.
Nwokey and Webb are both first time All-America award winners.
The Kentucky track and field team will compete in the Black and Gold Challenge this weekend in Orlando, Fla., on Saturday, March 20.
